I have long known the problems Skype is causing being a P2P program, and that many sysadmins have forbidden all use of it. Today I read that the Computer Department over at CERN has forbidden all use of Skype P2P software. Just a few moments earlier I read in the Skype Journal that there now also was a video plugin available. It’s called Video4Skype, what a surprise. I’m still gonna continue using Skype at home, together with my other VoIP solution, the Norwegian telio. Some of the new handsets for Skype are just breathtaking. They were just presented on the ongoing Computex 2005 in Taiwan. Oh yes, Skype is here to stay…

Yesterday the Norwegian phonzo opened, providing free VoIP between their softphones and low prices to regular phones. You also get your own phone number with this solution, so people can call you from regular phones as well. In their pressrelease they said that they had developed the world’s first full mobile VoIP solution. My first thought was simply WHAT ??? There is nothing new with softphones, and especially not if you only provide a slightly modified eyeBeam phone from Xten! Xten phones are great and making use of SIP, something that most of us call the standard when it comes to VoIP.

There are so many companies trying to earn fast money on VoIP or position themselves for being bought up for a great chunck of money. Norway is no exeption, as the second VoIP provider this year had to close their doors today. Don’t jump on the first VoIP provider read about, visit forums and read about the problems the users are taking up.
