Google Talk
Yesterday I downloaded Google Talk, but have till now only chatted with one friend on it and that was over GAIM. Google Talk is making use of the open Jabber protocol, and Google is actively advertising that you can chat over the Google Talk protocol with your prefered IM client. They have even made tutorials for some of them on how to configure it for use with your Google Talk account.
Sadly, the Google Talk protocol doesn’t work with BeOS IM Kit. The reason is simple, Google has added SSL for secure communication. Just as they have done for their Gmail solution.
Wouldn’t it be great seeing SSL support being added to the IM kit. The Mail Daemon Replacement kit has it for Gmail, and it is time to add it to the IM kit as well. Having a small tutorial on how to configure the IM kit for Google Talk on Google’s pages, will draw a lot attention to the IM kit project.
Any one up for the challange? I have plenty of Gmail accounts to give away (it’s needed for Google Talk).
Update:
I have just noticed that the VoIP technology that Google has chosen for their IM client is Norwegian, Global IP Sound. From their pressrelease you can see that also Skype, Nortel Networks and Marratech have chosen their technologies.
Skype seems to have responded to Google’s IM client with opening up their technology to third party developers. It should now be possible to implement Skype’s instant messaging services (and presence status) in to other applications, like for instance our IM client.
