Don’t get me wrong, I am not using Bittorrent or any other P2P service to download movies. I buy them. I have a huge LaserDisc and DVD collection, and have gotten my first HD DVD movie and have one ordered. But what I do not accept is that the movie industry should have a right to dictate how and when I can enjoy a movie. I like to make DivX copies of my movies, simply cause I can then take them with me on my laptop and have my battery lasting longer, simply cause the DVD drive isn’t constantly spinning. There is just one hatch with that, the movie industry doesn’t want you to do this and therefor they have introduced us to the wonderful world of DRM!

Good thing is that a month or two ago, a “hacker” (I would rather call him a freedom fighter) found a way to decrypt AACS DRM on individual films. I guess this must have led other freedom fighters on the way to find the “processing key” used to decrypt the DRM on all HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc films. Well, yesterday the first reports came that the new DRM on the two new formats were completly hacked. This must be the biggest nightmare for the movie industry and christmas eve for the consumers! This processing key is reported to be able to unlock, decrypt, and backup every HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc film released so far. As the freedom fighter points out, “nothing was actually hacked, cracked or even reverse engineered.” All he had to do was keep an eye on his memory, watch what changed, and voila… the processing key appeared.

The big question is now, what will the movie industry do? And after Steve Jobs recent open letter, asking the biggest music labels to drop DRM, what will they do? Continue to tease hackers/freedom figthers/consumers and end up getting their DRMs cracked and introduce new ones? This seems to have become a continues battle with no end! But I am sure that the dark side will loose in the end…
