I simply love the Maemo interface, but have sadly found the Nokia devices to be to expensive for now. The good news is that the interface is now heading for the desktop! Well, normally PDA interfaces are not the best ones for the desktop, and you can imagine why… . But these simplefied interfaces are perfect for people with limited needs, as for example people that are only now starting to use computers and taking the first steps on the Internet. Many of the applications on the Maemo platform remind me of the applications on BeOS, and why I loved that platform so much. Most of the applications only had the core functionality, and you never got lost in a preference panel.

It’s mainly what I need at home myself, when not working from home. Simple e-mail client with IMAP support, Google Talk for VoIP, a decent browser (Opera or Web Core) and a simple PIM solution (Contacts, To Dos and Calendar). Best of all, it is Debian based and totally free!!!

I am really looking forward to see how Hildon Desktop is coming a long and to the first ISO release of this distro. I might even sign up as a Norwegian translator.

Have a look at the first screenshot.
