YR.NO – iPhone app
A new Norwegian iPhone application is about to hit the AppStore. The application s i is a mobile service by Meteorologisk Institutt and NRK, based on their very popular web-based weather service, yr.no. The service is already available for mobile phones, and the software house Polleo made a free unofficial version for the iPhone, nWeather.
nWeather had 2 147 Norwegian places (cities, towns and villages) connected with weather data from yr.no. At first that might sound impressive, but it is actually only a small fraction of the information available through yr.no! The weather service contains information from 700.000 places in Norway and 6.5 million places abroad. For instance, also my weather information from my mom’s hometown, Mindszent.
I was therefor quite so excited to read that NRK and Meteorologisk Institutt were working together with the software house apps, to create a more or less “fully working” yr.no application for the iPhone. Yr for the iPhone will have the search field on the top of the application window, where you can search for information from 11 thousand places in Norway and the world. You will also have the opportunity to use the built-in GPS to get the weather forecast from where you are now. It all sounds impressive, it’s just that I don’t understand why the application comes with the limitation of 11.000 places. The mobile phone version of the web site doesn’t come with the same limitation! I hoped this could be the perfect application for people hiking up in the mountains. I have so often used yr.no to decide if I should take with me rain clothes when out biking, after having watched how the weather will change from hour to hour.
Look for a review when the application is available on the AppStore.
