Another one bites the dust

0

Not all Web 2.0 services make it. And not everything Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, founders of Skype, touch turns to gold. They are, according to IDG.se, pulling the plug on Joost. There are not many video solutions that have really succeeded in this area, Youtube and Vimeo, are not direct competitors. And Hulu is only available in U.S, iPlayer from BBC only in U.K, other services are also not available worldwide. But I can see that the amount of national services made it difficult for Joost.

Their service was cool, but lacked serious content. I often felt that I was running a demo of what the application was capable of doing. The video streams had and have a high quality, often better then their competitors. I didn’t mind running it as a standalone application, nor directly from a browser. I just wanted content…

Dead Snow – Ein, Zwei, Die

Watched the Norwegian movie Død Snø (Dead Snow) on DVD today. It had it’s premiere yesterday in the U.S. Dead Snow was one of the biggest hits at the Sundance Film Festival.

Some my readers will perhaps remember that Tommy Wirkola made another great movie that I wrote about, Kill Buljo.

Golem.de with a review of Cybook Gen3

The German online computer magazine Golem.de has a five page long review of the ebook device Cybook Gen3 from Bookeen. The also included a nice video of the device:

The review writes that the device is capable to open text stored as ePub and PDF. And continues with information about the new firmware (1.4 Build 909) being capable open text and html file created with Projekt Gutenberg. There is just one problem with that, this update is not released for the rest of us. Just announced. I have long been waiting for that update.

Street art in Oslo

0

When walking in Oslo you will see a lot of grafitti on building walls and other surfaces, most of it ugly, but there are exceptions.

Grafitti at Pavilion

This first one was found at the Pavilion café at Kuba (between Grünerløkka and Gamle Aker). Another beautiful wall can be found at Grønland, in the entrance to a park in Urtegata / Platous gate.

Grafitti at Tøyen

The third photo that I have included is street art made by herakut, Herakut is a symbiosis of the aliases Hera and Akut, two graffiti artists from Frankfurt and Erfurt, Germany. Their contributions to make Oslo more beautiful can be found outside the bar Mir (also called Grünerløkka Lufthavn). They have also done a painting at Deichmanske Library (I will try to find it).

Herakut at Mir

Don’t you hurt me is actually four drawings, forth ones is on the other side of the entrance gate to Mir and it was therefor not possible to include it in the same picture. But I have put together a small gallery:

Don't You Hurt Me

The last picture I want to share with you in this blog entry is taken outside Pantagana Artclub in Deichmans gate 15. Their main purpose is to make a social, and artistic habitat for people interested in arts, poetry, music and social gathering.

More streetart (grafitti) pictures are available on my Flickr account.

How to dig your own grave

Techcrunch has a very interesting read today: Deny This, Last.fm. Not that I would have anything to hide, and I have already stopped using the Last.fm service. And that for a very good reason: Last.fm chose to split their userbase in two: 1st class users and 2nd class users. The 1st class users are free riders, while the 2nd class users have to play for the fun. As one that had been defined as a 2nd class user, I simply decided to stop using Last.fm.

Update: There are always two sides of a story, also to this one. Guardian last night posted a link to Last.fm’answer, that was posted in their forum.

Is there any music service that can import my listening habits (data), so that I can finally delete my Last.fm account? And my other big question is, how many users have Last.fm lost on these two decissions? It must be many, and perhaps this is the end of Last.fm?
