UHU-Linux soon to come in version 2.0
I had almost lost all hope for one of my earlier favourite Linux distros, the Hungarian UHU-Linux. But three days ago the developers announced the availability of the first test release of UHU-Linux 2.0. According to the release announcement (in Hungarian/Magyar), the new version features a number of important conceptual changes to the distribution; these include availability of a complete UHU-Linux DVD, multilingual features (besides Hungarian, the new installer also supports English), switch to UTF-8 as the default character encoding, unified keyboard shortcuts for all desktops, and new automount features. Among the known bugs, there are issues with writing CDs and DVDs in this release. Those interested in helping with bug reports can download the CD and DVD images from here: uhu-linux-2.0-test1-cd.iso (699MB, MD5) or uhu-linux-2.0-test1-dvd.iso (3,260MB, MD5).
I have installed the CD image of UHU-Linux under Parallels Workstation. An interesting thing that you see, is that you “simply have to read” the license. The license window stays active for 2 minutes before you can continue. Their installation routine is one of the best that I have seen for any Linux distro. The developers have done a great job. Sadly network didn’t work under Parallels.
My personal take : It’s great to see that you are back on track!
Gnome to get better audio support?
Gnome might get a new and better audio implemention. A development team today released Polypaudio 0.9.0. I am asking myself, just as Jeff Waugh, are we about to get a cure for the ALSA blues?
An interesting screenshot was also released with the newsupdate.
Your favourite restaurant?
Dear Ithamar,
soon it will be summer again, and as it seems that I will once again come and visit you for a week, could you please go and check out this place for me?

It’s supposed to be in Amsterdam. As I would be coming in July, you luckily have a month finding the place.
Picture is “borrowed” from a KDE developer that visited Amsterdam for the latest KDE Multimedia Dev Meeting.
