Contributing to Rough Guides’ Budapest
0It was a pleasant surprise to see that I have been added to the list of contributors to the last version of Rough Guides’ to Budapest, and now I really want to do another trip to Budapest. In fact, I haven’t been to Budapest this year at all! A mini-weekend would be perfect. Well, I bought the last version of the guide and I hope to read through it the following weeks and do a trip to Budapest afterwards.
I would be very happy with being able to contribute to the next version of the book as well.
Let the battle begin!

Norwegian has been flying Gardemoen – Budapest for years already, and have until now been alone on flying direct. Norwegian will also be flying Rygge – Budapest from upcoming spring. Their planes on the first route has always been more or less full, and the tickets have cause of this become a bit more expensive. But from next summer this might change, as the Hungarian low fair airline Wizz Air will start flying to Torp on June 26th. Here is some lines from their press release of today:
Wizz Air, the largest low cost airline based in CEE recently announced a series of developments from its bases in Hungary and Poland.
The airline said, that it would expand its Budapest operations next summer by adding 15 new weekly flights compared to summer 2007 or 27% more capacity. The airline will increase frequencies on most of its current routes, add Goteborg, Oslo-Torp and Venice-Treviso to its Budapest network and reintroduce the popular summer seasonal flights to Bulgaria (Bourgas and Varna), Spain (Barcelona-Girona and Palma de Mallorca) and Greece (Corfu, Rhodes and Heraklion).
Great to see that I will be getting cheaper tickets to Hungary from next year on, as according to Boarding.no prices will start at 199 NOK (incl. handling fees and taxes). Bus tickets will come on top of that.
Another Schmap Tourist Guide
1Just days after Schmap asked for permission to use a picture I took at Kampen for their Oslo guide, they turn to me and ask for permission to use another three pictures for their Budapest guide. Of course, also this time I gave their my permission. The pictures were taken last year when Steinar and me stayed there for 2 days, running around taking pictures mostly from the Cow Parade that was visiting town.
Sent a letter to Rough Guides
When Steinar and I were visiting Budapest this summer, Steinar bought the best travelling guide I have seen for Budapest so far and I have seen a few! It’s the “THE ROUGH GUIDE to Budapest“.
Rough Guides has managed to build up a community of travellers reading their travel guides and comming with suggestions for improvements and corrections to parts that are outdated. And for a big city as Budapest, there will always be things in travel guides that are outdated. As the authors of the guide have a focus on how you can get to Budapest cheaply, I started the e-mail with some information about the new commercial airport by Balaton, and the two flights Ryanair has from Stansted and Hahn to this new airport.
If you are visiting Budapest, you must visit one of the many coffee houses in the city. New of this year is that New York Palace has opened. More then worth a visit if you ask me.
The third tips I came with, was about Goethe Institute having moved away from the State Opera House. It was a really nice cafe and I was frequently visiting it before going to the Opera. Great coffee and German newspapers. It was also a place where many backpackers met. A true loss for the area.
I will spend parts of the weekend relaxing and reading through the book, and see if there is more that I can contribute with.
One last thing, a few of the travelling guides are available as PodScrolls for your iPod.
Update – September 2nd:
I got a real nice answer from Rough Guides, here is parts of it:
Thank you very much for your email and for your comments and information regarding the Rough Guide to Budapest. I have passed your email on to the authors of the guide who I’m sure will refer to it when preparing the next edition.
Guess I have to buy the next book then, just to check if my name is in it!
