Google Buzz

Finally an update to Gmail that I am looking forward to:

Google Buzz is integrated in Gmail and is a more social way of communicating than e-mail. My first though was, could this be functionality from the Google Wave project?

Buzz can be used with Picasa, Youtube, Google Reader, Flickr and Twitter, and is one of the easiest way I have seen to share updates, photos, videos and more. You can choose to share publicly with the world or privately to a small group of friends each time you post. What’s more is that you will automatically follow the people you email and chat with the most.

After having read about Google Buzz, looked at some screenshots and a video, I must admit that it is quite so similar to Posterous. Posterous works with tons of Internet services. I have been using Posterous as my blog in Norwegian, and enabled it to talk with Twitter, Facebook and WordPress.

And yes, Buzz also works on your favourite phone: iPhone and Android. Both phones have geolocation support. Now we just have to wait for our Gmail accounts to be upgraded. Google says that they will be rolling out it out over the next few days.

Google Wave with a small update

Google Wave was this morning down for maintenance:

google-wave-first-update google-wave-first-update-1When it opened up it’s services again, I could see one nice change added. It is now possible to see who of your colleagues/friends are online. The feature should not be mistaken with available status. As far as I can see, the status system is not integrated with Google Talk and will therefor not inherit the status from this service.

I have so far, not been able to see any other changes.

What Google Wave is all about

Finally somebody has gotten it right! I have been reading countless of headless reviews of Google Wave. So many tech gurus have been describing Google Wave as a disappointment. Most of that seems to come from the fact that nobody seems to get what Wave is for, as they have been comparing it to social media. Guess what, it is not to compete with Twitter or Facebook. It is simply what Google calls it, an “online tool for real-time communication and collaboration”.

Daniel Tenner has written an article that should be a mandatory read for all of us that have gotten an invite to preview Google Wave.

Surfing a big Wave

Google WaveI finally got my invite today. Don’t understand what made Google let me wait this long. And yes, I got invites that I will share with my friends. Some are already sent to the most eager ones, and others will get their invites in the next following days. If I have understood it correctly, the invites are not instantly transfered. So be patient!

I only had a quick run through the application. It is an early developer preview, and clearly not a finished product. I mostly like what I am seeing, and hope to be able do a review when I have gotten to know the product better and when more plugins have been made available. Google Wave fits perfect in with most of the other applications we use today, Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Google Contacts and Google Docs. I can see the being used for brainstorming in projects, and that we then export the transcript to Google Docs to finish the document. And having scientific staff working a lot with maps, the Google Maps plugin makes it easier to project work around maps.

This is surely an application that I will dedicate more time on. If you already have an account, what is your favorite plugin so far? I’m sure I will find out how to upload new plugins soon. I saw one for WordPress. I’m not sure that I will do my blogging from Google Wave in the future, but I will at least try it!

This is gonna be huge!
