Csak szex és más semmi
I guess that Csak szex és más semmi (Just sex and nothing else) – homepage – will be the best movie that I will be seeing this summer. Most of you would know that I have never been a great fan of Hollywood movies, and that I am mostly watching European and Chinese movies, with British and French movies as my favourites. You might also know that my parents are from Hungary, and that I travel to Hungary 2-3 times a year.
After the communism most of the movie industry seemed to have disappeared, but the last couple of years a few great movies have been produced. I have earlier been writing about the movie Kontroll with Sándor Csányi, and I started following him on IMDb. Csak szex és más semmi is a great comedy, and it felt very much like watching a love story with Hugh Grant. The movie is the first movie directed by Krisztina Goda, and she said in an interview: “When the idea first came up, Bridget Jones wasn’t around yet. (Helen Fielding published The Diary of Bridget Jones in 1996 – K. H.) There was a female trend, but the single movie as a genre did not exist yet”. Judith Schell and Kata Dobó (can be seen in Basic Instinct 2 – a movie I don’t plan to watch) are both doing a great job, and are two actresses to follow in the future.
The story can be summed up as Dóra (the main character) longs for a partner; on the other, she is afraid of the disappointment, so she plays it safe – she wants something badly, yet she is terrified of it. So there’s always hesitation. Dóra eventually becomes fed up with the fear, the permanent anxiety. She decides to try what she is so terrified of – although she might not succeed.
I had many great laughs. To bad that this movie didn’t appear in the cinemas here in Norway. Kontroll was playing for more or less half a year.
The movie was released on DVD April 28th this year, and they have included English subtitles. Sadly I didn’t manage to get hold of a copy when I was visiting Hungary this summer. Perhaps next time, or hopefully it will appear on Play or Amazon…
I’ve just bought KONTROLL on DVD
0Last week I saw a great Hungarian movie directed by Nimród Antal, called Kontroll.
The movie caught me with surprise and was quite an adreline kick. I know the massive subway system in Budapest which provided the stunning setting for KONTROLL, very well after year of use. But I never thought of it like this.
The movie is a high-speed romantic thriller in which the lives of assorted outcasts, lovers, and dreamers intersect and collide, and where one young hero, one mysterious maiden, and one particularly nasty killer must conduct a race against time, trains, and destiny itself in their frantic pursuit of one another.
KONTROLL has been awarded Film Festival prices and was Hungary’s most successful film in the domestic box office in 2003. I’ve just ordered it on DVD, and suggest you do the same. It’s such a great movie.
